I made lots of photos in
Korea, many of them with a digital camera. In autumn 2000 I used
a Sony camera of Lucia to explore the totally new life in Korea.
At the end of my stay I purchased an Olympus digital cam at the
Yongsan Electronic Market in Seoul because I lost my good old
Japanese model on a trip to the Confederation cup soccer game on
the East coast.
I am happy that I dont have to organize all this development
and sorting stuff anymore. Just digital is much easier, faster
and cheaper.
The photos are stored at Pixum
,
currently the best imaging service provider in Germany and a
fast growing start-up company. They are uploaded in original
solution and quality, so that you (and me) can also order paper
photos. This service is at the moment just available in Germany,
but will be extended in the future. The navigation is also
available in English.
Originally I wanted to build my own galeries, but this takes
too much time and effort, so that just one was finished.
Outsourcing this task to Pixum is much easier.

The
city I lived 1 year in. It’s a gigantic town, especially for one who
comes from a village of a few thousand people. 11 million people within
the city borders adding to over 20 million in the urban area makes Seoul
one of the largest agglomerations worldwide. And regarding the fact that
99.5% of the people are homogenic Koreans (0.5 % foreigners) you can
easily feel strange.
But
as soon as you are able to read the Hangul alphabet and found some friends,
everything will work out well. The whole city with its superb public
transport system (if you can read Korean) is at your reach with all its
opportunities. From cultural experiences, sport facilities, hiking, up to
extensive shopping you can feel the life of a metropolis with its various
modern and historic elements.

This gallery at Pixum contains much more (and the above) pictures from the
campus of this Jesuit university, which is informally called Sogang High
School by the students because of the strict regulations regarding class
attendance and homeworks.
Moreover you will
also find many pictures from parties and dinners, so that you can take a
small glance about the Korean food. University & Party Life

Seminars are held twice a year at the Graduate School of
International Studies, one in winter and summer each. This time
the students, professors and office staff went to the East coast
to visit some of the most famous Korean companies.
We went to POSCO in Pohang, one of the biggest steel makers
in the world and we went to Hyundai shipbuilding, which
dominates the world market in several categories.
Regarding the fact that South Korea has no extensive natural
resources and was totally destroyed by the Korean war in 1950, it
is impressive to see how the Korean economy developed so fast.
As it is with every Korean seminar we also enjoyed nice food
(rawfish in this case), lots of alcohol and Karaoke, and some
cultural sightseeing in Kyongju.

This is what every Korean tells you in autumn: "Go hiking
in the Soraksan Mountains."
And this proofed to be right. We colourfull leafes transform
the mountain range in a beautiful atmosphere. I went there on a
3-day hiking trip with Marc and Feli. The first night we stayed
just a little under the Taechongbong-Peak at a mountain hut. We
could lay down on the wooden planks and washing was strictly
forbidden to save water.
Oh, by the way, don't think you're gonna be alone in the
montains, the Koreans are very active hikers. My tip: Go early
in autumn to avoid the masses.

The "Hawaii of Korea" it is often called. And this is
the number one tip for tourists to go, if you ask Koreans in
winter, spring and summer. I don't know if this saying is right,
I've never been to Hawaii.
But for Cheju Island I can say, it's really beautiful. It is
located somewhere south of the Korean peninsula and has a
subtropical climate. The island features beautiful beaches,
botanic gardens, historic villages,Buddhist temples and so on.
You should also go hiking on the central vulvano Mt. Halla which
may give you a nice overview of the island.
Cheju is also famous with every Korean, so you better avoid
the short peak season. In off-season you'll just find lots of
wedding couples on the search for photo opportunities.
